Tired Australians risk accidents, mood disorders - Yahoo!7

A national survey has found about 20 per cent of Australians have fatigue and exhaustion due to lack of sleep.

The Sleep Health Foundation's study of the sleeping habits of 1500 adults showed that one in five of respondents said poor sleep affected their mood and ability to perform daily activities.

The Foundation's chairman Professor David Hillman says sleepiness can significantly increase the risk of an accident on the road or in the workplace.

"A lot of the population work under the misapprehension that they can get by with less sleep than they actually need," he said.

Quad bikes criticised following child death - Yahoo!7

The death of a seven-year-old girl in a South Australian quad bike accident has triggered more debate about the safety of the vehicles, including a call for children's quad bikes to be recalled.

The girl was a passenger on the quad bike when it crashed on Sunday afternoon on Thistle Island, about 40 kilometres south-east of Port Lincoln.

She sustained serious head injuries and died at the scene.

The Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health has been studying quad bike safety and says the vehicles are the leading cause of death in Australian agriculture.

The centre's director, Professor Sabina Knight, says mandatory crush protection is needed for adult-sized bikes and is a proven way of reducing deaths and serious injuries.

"It's still possible to be injured, it's still possible to be killed, but the modelling to date suggests that serious harm and fatality reduction could be up to 70 per cent and that is significant," she said.

Environment activists express concern over the reported use of carcinogenic asbestos onboard aircraft-carrier warship INS Vikramaditya

Even as the delivery of India’s second aircraft carrier, Admiral Gorshkov, has been pushed back towards the end of 2013 owing to repairs in the malfunctioning boiler section, activists and environmental advocacy groups have expressed concern over reported use of asbestos-based insulation in the warship.

Given the health hazards that asbestos poses and the fact that International Maritime Organisation (IMO), of which India is a member state since 1959, has banned installation of all types of asbestos-containing materials as of January 1, 2011, activists have expressed “shock and surprise” over India’s willingness to accept use of asbestos in the aircraft carrier’s insulation in the boiler section.

In a letter to Navy Chief Admiral D.K. Joshi, Occupational and Environmental Health Network of India (OEHNI) coordinator Mohit Gupta pointed out that IMO circular of 2011 was binding on all IMO member states.

The move at the refurbished £1billion Broadcasting House building in central London follows similar bans on waste paper baskets, microwaves, kettles and folding bikes.

From banning Santa from riding his sleigh to stopping children from throwing snowballs, health and safety legislation gets a bad rap these days, at no time of the year more than at Christmas, when the cultural clash between killjoy puritans and Merrie England's devil-may-care revellers appears most acute.

We all think we know how a set of rules once designed to protect us has grown to the point where it winds its coils around every department of life, crushing the life out of the most harmless pastimes and traditions.
