Quad bikes criticised following child death - Yahoo!7

The death of a seven-year-old girl in a South Australian quad bike accident has triggered more debate about the safety of the vehicles, including a call for children's quad bikes to be recalled.

The girl was a passenger on the quad bike when it crashed on Sunday afternoon on Thistle Island, about 40 kilometres south-east of Port Lincoln.

She sustained serious head injuries and died at the scene.

The Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health has been studying quad bike safety and says the vehicles are the leading cause of death in Australian agriculture.

The centre's director, Professor Sabina Knight, says mandatory crush protection is needed for adult-sized bikes and is a proven way of reducing deaths and serious injuries.

"It's still possible to be injured, it's still possible to be killed, but the modelling to date suggests that serious harm and fatality reduction could be up to 70 per cent and that is significant," she said.
